Join botanical painter Alison Watt for a 2-day introduction to botanical painting in watercolours using plants from the Garden. This class will cover watercolour materials (brushes, paints, and paper) and basic watercolour techniques (mixing, glazing, wet-in-wet, masking). Special attention will be given to the concerns of plant painting (greens, whites, darks, stems, leaves, etc).

Weekend Workshop:

Day 1: Saturday, August 17th 2024

Day 2: Sunday, August 18th 2024

Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (Saturday & Sunday)

Location: UBC Botanical Garden, Garden Pavilion

Cost:

Public - $150.00 plus tax

Concession (Garden Members, UNA Residents, Youth (13-17), Seniors (65+), UBC Students|Staff|Faculty) - $130.00 plus tax

Supplies: Watercolour paper is provided. Students may bring their own artist's quality paints or have paint provided for a $15 lab fee (at the time of the course). Sources of materials: Opus Art Supplies (Granville Island, Hastings St., 3rd St. North Vancouver) or DeSerres (West Broadway).

  • Sketch paper
  • Pencils (HB, 2B)
  • A roll of paper towel or tissue
  • A palette (covered is preferable)
  • Brushes: good synthetic brushes (i.e. Opus Allegro) sizes 1, 3, 6, 10

It is suggested that you bring artist's quality watercolour paint (Windsor Newton, DaVinci, M. Graham, Daniel Smith) unless you want to have paint supplied.

Instructor: Alison Watt is a popular instructor returning to the Garden. She is a naturalist and visual artist who has been a botanical painter for over twenty years. Her work has appeared in many invitational and juried shows and is in collections in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. She has taught several botanical painting classes for UBC Botanical Garden and in many venues on Vancouver Island, including her own studio on Protection Island, Nanaimo. Her classes aim to provide careful instruction in a relaxed atmosphere. Alison is also a writer, who illustrated her award-winning book, The Last Island, a Naturalist's Sojourn on Triangle Island. Important Notes: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to class so that you can walk through the Garden to arrive at the classroom. Parking at the garden is $1.50 an hour, up to $6.00 a day. 

Cancellation Policies: UBC Botanical Garden's does not have the capacity to refund tickets. If the workshop is cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control, ticket holders will receive a gift card for the value of their tickets that can be redeemed for UBC Botanical Garden and Nitobe Memorial Garden admission and in The Shop in the Garden
